Where to stay in Hanoi: which neighbourhood to choose
Updated 1 November 2026 · 4 min read
In short
For a first stay in Hanoi, sleep in the Old Quarter or around Hoan Kiem Lake: everything is walkable and the shuttles to Ha Long and Ninh Binh pick up there. The French Quarter is calmer and more upmarket; West Lake (Tay Ho) suits longer stays, about 15 minutes away by Grab.
The neighbourhoods at a glance
| Area | Best for | Strengths | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem) | First stay | Walkable, street food, shuttles to Ha Long and Ninh Binh | Noisy and busy late at night |
| French Quarter | Couples, comfort | Grand hotels, Opera House, wider and calmer streets | Less street food on the doorstep |
| West Lake (Tay Ho) | Long stays, families | Calm, lakeside cafés, villas and apartments | About 15 min by Grab from the Old Quarter |
| Ba Dinh | Cultural sights | Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda | Quieter at night, fewer restaurants |
Our advice
- 2-3 nights, first trip: the Old Quarter, ideally on a street set back from the loudest ones, or around Hoan Kiem Lake.
- Couples or a more comfortable budget: the French Quarter, a few minutes' walk from the lake.
- A week or more: West Lake, more residential, with a Grab into the centre.
