The finest sections

  • Hue - Da Nang: the Hai Van Pass, between mountains and sea. The finest ride in the country, best by day.
  • Da Nang - Nha Trang: the coast, by day if possible.
  • Hanoi - Hue: ideal overnight, saving a hotel night.

How to book

  • Online: on dsvn.vn, the official Vietnam Railways site.
  • When: sales generally open about 60 days before departure. Book early for a soft sleeper, especially around Tet.
  • On the day: arrive 30 minutes before, and keep your passport and ticket handy.

The train is rarely the fastest. If you are short of time, a domestic flight is quicker over long distances.
