Night train or plane in Vietnam: how to get around?

Updated 31 October 2026

Our verdict

Combine both: the Hanoi-Hue night train (about 12-13 hours) replaces a hotel night, and the Hue-Da Nang section by day runs along the coast. For long distances to the South (Da Nang or Hanoi to Saigon), flying saves a whole day.

Which to choose?

Night train

The right choice if the leg fits into one night (Hanoi-Hue) or follows the coast by day (Hue-Da Nang).

Domestic flight

The right choice if you are skipping a whole region, for example from the North or Centre to Saigon.

Frequently asked questions

Is the night train in Vietnam comfortable?

In a soft sleeper (4-berth cabin), yes for most travellers: bedding, air conditioning, a door that closes. Book a lower berth for more space and bring earplugs.

Which train journey is worth it in Vietnam?

Hue-Da Nang by day: the line hugs the sea and runs below the Hai Van Pass, in about 2.5-3 hours. Hanoi-Hue overnight is mainly practical.
