Tam Coc or Trang An: which Ninh Binh boat trip to choose?

Updated 1 November 2026

Our verdict

Trang An is the more complete choice: a longer route, several caves and temples, in a UNESCO-listed site. Tam Coc is shorter and runs through rice fields, at its best when they turn golden before the harvest, around late May and early June. With a single day, most tours from Hanoi do one of the two, plus Bai Dinh pagoda or Hoa Lu.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Tam Coc and Trang An on the same day?

It is possible but long. To do both without rushing, spend a night in Ninh Binh: one boat trip in the morning, the other or Hang Mua the next day.

Do you need to book the boat in advance?

On your own, you buy the ticket on site at the pier. Tours from Hanoi include the boat, transport and often lunch.
